This is how the story goes. A fourth grader, a second grader, a Kindergartner, and a preschooler. All on deck ready to start a new school year. Eager.
Yet, before they could get their still-chubby little paws around those pencils, their parents gathered them with the family for a dinner where both panzanella and cheese puffs were served.
Around the long table, these four pupils learned that this year they would practice speaking up. When one has a question, one must ask it. When one has a friend, one must defend that friend. When one has a faith, when one has a fear, when one has a belief, one must speak up for all these things.
Their father set up a stage and the dinner guests were given the opportunity to speak up and declare their beliefs. And they did. He also told this story.
