Ocrakoke Island

During certain times of the year, the ONLY hospital on the Outer Banks gets pretty busy.  During these busy times, the ER gets understaffed.  Dr. Gooch goes out periodically to help 'em out.  When we can, we join him!  We feel so fortunate to be able to do this because it is such a beautiful place.

The Outer Banks (OBX) are a 175 mile long string of narrow barrier islands off the coast of North Carolina. They cover approximately half the northern North Carolina coastline, separating the Albemarle Sound and Pamlico Sound from the Atlantic Ocean.

This past weekend we stayed in Kill Devil Hills, it is about a 3 1/2 hours drive from Cicada Cottage.  On Saturday, we hopped in the car and drove down on NC 12 across the Oregon Inlet through Rodanthe and Avon to the very tip of Hatteras Island on the Cape.  There wait ferries to take us and our vaneo to Ocracoke.

Ocrakoke has the best beaches, of so the locals tell us.  And we believe them.  It takes about 1 1/2 hours to make the trek.  But, sailing across with the seagulls, being mesmerized by the wake off the end of the boat, and waving to other passing vessels, it makes it all worth it (plus the fine sand and crystal clear water once you're there!).

i've posted before on your blog that our family ADORES the OBX!! We've been several years in a row.....sadly missing last year and most likely again this year. it really is the most relaxing place....very little to do BUT relax!! sand sun and water is what we love the best!! how dreamy that you are SO close to make this drive so easily as it's a 12 hour trek for us but well worth it! love the drip castles.....such a mesmerizing activity!!
