A History Lesson For You: The Lost Colony

In 1587, English settlers settled themselves on Roanoke Island between the outerbanks and the Albemarle Sound.  The endeavor was funded by Sir Walter Raleigh but the final group of colonists disappeared after three years without supplies from England.  It is a big mystery, the answer for which archeologists and scientist are still digging.  The only "clue" was the word "CROATAN" carved on a tree. The colonists were nowhere to be found!

The rascals taking notes as Dr. Gooch lectures on the finer points of failed colonialism.

Virginia Dare was born during the attempted settlement.  She is the first English child born on American soil.

We stood in the "preserved" mounds surrounding Fort Raleigh.

A replica of what little Virginia Dare may have appeared like.

The rascals were proud to learn that the beginnings of a nation were found in Our State.

What do you speculate happened to those late 16th century settlers?
