Local Seafood

And when I say local, I mean LOCAL.  Where we stay is surrounded by marinas, boat slips, and water ways.  We're on the sound side minutes from the Atlantic side on the historic Island of Roanoke in Manteo.  It really is dreamy.  Dr. Gooch discovered some crab traps in the storage closet and baited them with cold cuts and raw chicken.  "Checking the traps" has been a highlight of this visit to the Outer Banks and will certainly become a tradition each summer.  As Lucy hoisted up the traps set under a bridge we discovered we had caught some angry blue crab.  We threw the smalls ones back and kept the bigger ones.

Throw the live crabs into a pot of boiling water for 6 minutes and enjoy!  What an unexpected treat.

What a fun thing to do! Did your kids eat it?

Crab is one of the select few types of sea food that I actually like.

One of my family's longest-running traditions is getting steamed crabs on the OBX, putting newspaper over the table, and going at it with a mallet or two. We're on the OBX right now as well (soundside). Hope you've enjoyed your visit!
