Spencer, NC, in its heyday, was a hub for steam engines. Southern Railways ran trains all the way from New Orleans to DC and they all passed through Spencer! They all "put in" here at Spencer Shops for repair. That is, until the diesel came along. Now, Spencer houses the North Carolina Transportation Museum, where history is preserved especially for enthusiasts such as our son Seth. It was six-year-old heaven. I was quite entertained myself. My favorite: the "house cars" complete with beds and boudoirs!
