Match Madness

Our match day 2005 embrace

Imagine thousands of people across the nation throwing a bunch of cities into a hat then waiting several months. Then on one day in March (today in fact) all of these myriads of people with their spouses and offspring discover (usually on a large screen in front of hundreds of people) where they will be moving to in a few short months. It is absolutely and at once invigorating and tortuous. Some will be "matched" to their first choice, some will not "match" but will simply "scramble" and be sent somewhere entirely unexpected. It is a bizarre ritual as are so many elements of the medical doctor's journey. Who needs St. Patrick's Day when you have Match Day!? Good Luck, ya'll!

Congrats Julia!

This is a ritual that I live through my sister...but one that I think might push me over the edge!
So fun that you were able to get together for lunch yesterday!

It was so exciting to hear about Julia's match today! So wild to have your future not in your own hands.

It brings to mind the graduation ceremony sat Tulane - did you guys dance down the aisle with umbrellas and a jazz band? Love New Orleans. Hurray for Julia!

Oh- I LOVED match day. I swear nothing could ever replace the energy in that room. We found out that here they all just go to their post boxes and find out where they matched- hello talk about BORING. I am so happy how Tulane did it.

Rebecca- we didn't have a jazz band (they did it at graduation instead I guess), but it doesn't surprise me. Most people had been drinking for hours and there was no way someone wasn't going to get hurt. I got several uncomfortable kisses that I'm sure were alcohol fueled.

I made Doug call first thing this morning about his program. We go and LDS guy. Hurray for San Antonio! It's only taken 5 years to get another one.

I had no idea it all happened on the same day and in the same room. Crazy. I would be a stressful mess if I had to face this. Congrats to Julia.

I had never heard of match day before all you blogging gals started talking about. What a crazy thing to go through.

I'm with Jill...new to the whole "match" concept...crazy that that's how it's done. And what did you think when the answer was Phoenix?!

Phoenix was our top choice!!

An interesting ritual, INDEED! I think I took that picture from the balcony! What fun memories. We were (secretly) hoping that you would match in Jacksonville, FL - I know, I know - it was your second choice (and we were VERY excited for you getting your top choice), but then we would have been living closer since we matched in our favorite spot Gainesville. What an exhilarating day! Seeing that picture definitely flooded the memories back. And yes, I remember all the green from St. Patrick's Day and the fun crawfish boil to follow...

That does sound pretty crazy. I love your skipped spring pictures. They definitely feel like summer photos.

That looks like an old photo--do they take it for you or did Craig's parents join you that day? FUN FUN FUN!

Just the sort of waiting game that would drive me crazy with just wanting to know and have it done with! Interesting that Lara loved that. Great that you got your first choice. And hurray for Julia!
